Frequently Asked Questions
PRODUCT & INGREDIENTS
What makes Cafe Pastel’s Pastel de Nata different from a Hong Kong–style Egg Tart?
Hong Kong–style egg tarts are typically made using whole eggs, giving the custard a pale yellow colour and a lightly sweet, slightly salty flavour. They were influenced by the British custard tart, introduced to Hong Kong during colonial times, and represent a blend of British and Cantonese baking traditions.
In contrast, Portuguese Pastel de Nata (including ours) are traditionally made using egg yolks only, creating a richer, silkier custard. The pastry is hand-rolled into flaky layers, and the tarts are baked at high heat to create their signature caramelised dark spots. Pastel de Nata originated in the 1800s at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Portugal.
